Creating new workbooks using templates

Excel allows you to create new workbooks using templates, or predefined patterns. Several templates are preloaded in Excel, while others are located on Microsoft Office Online.

To create new workbooks using templates on your computer:

  • Open Excel.
  • Select New from the menu. The New Workbook dialog box will appear.
  • Select FileactionNew from the main menu. The New Workbook task pane will appear.
  • Click On my computer... in the Templates section of the New Workbook task pane. The Templates dialog box will appear.
  • Select the Spreadsheet Solutions tab.
  • Select the template you wish to use.
  • Click OK.

To create new workbooks using templates on Office Online:

  • Open Excel.
  • Select FileactionNew from the main menu. The New Workbook task pane will appear.
  • Click Templates on Office Online in the Templates section of the New Workbook task pane. Office Online will open in a new browser window.
  • Browse the template categories, and click the link of the category you wish to view.
  • Click a template link.
  • Click Download Now to download the template.

Challenge!

  • Open Excel.
  • Select Fileaction New from the main menu.
  • View the templates on your computer.
  • Click Templates on Office Online.
  • View several of the template categories on Office Online.
  • Select a template.
  • Download the template.
  • Enter your data into the template.
  • Save and close Excel.
